About Roadside Technologies
Roadside Technologies is a leading UK manufacturer and supplier of innovative traffic management and security solutions. Their product range spans Variable Message Signs (VMS), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), speed reduction equipment, CCTV towers, and other bespoke safety solutions. These products are deployed across the UK’s motorway networks, construction sites, community roads, and large-scale events.
At the heart of Roadside’s mission is a simple but powerful goal: make roads safer. Whether it’s guiding vehicles through construction zones, alerting motorists to hazards, or securing public gatherings, their systems play a critical role in maintaining order and safety across complex environments.
As Roadside continues to innovate and develop state-of-the-art highway safety products, its commitment to safety extends beyond physical infrastructure to the digital realm.
The Growing Importance of Cybersecurity
With connected systems now central to road safety and traffic management, cybersecurity is not just an IT concern; it’s a core business issue.
“Cybersecurity is baked into everything we do, Our equipment and systems are integral to public safety. If something is compromised, say, a VMS that gives out incorrect information or a CCTV feed that goes offline, it could put real lives at risk.”
Amelia Ritchie
Head of IT infrastructure at Roadside Technologies
Roadside’s customers range from local authorities, traffic management companies and construction firms to event organisers and community groups. With such a wide array of stakeholders relying on their technology, system integrity and data security are non-negotiables. Protecting the business means protecting people.
Raising Awareness with Limited Resources
When Amelia joined the company, she inherited a strong security foundation laid by the company’s leadership and IT team. But while the right technologies and policies were in place, the human side of cybersecurity needed strengthening.
“I’m the first person at Roadside with a cybersecurity-specific role,” she notes. “There was already a great culture of responsibility, but we lacked a structured, scalable way to educate and engage the team on cybersecurity on a regular basis.”
Roadside, with just over 30 employees, faced common small business challenges, including limited time, multiple responsibilities, and tight budgets. Amelia initially rolled out informal training: 1:1 conversations, team talks during company-wide meetings, and ad hoc email reminders. These efforts sparked great conversations and improved awareness, but they weren’t sustainable.
At the same time, the company was preparing for Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001 certifications, and needed a more formalised approach to user awareness and behaviour.
A Phishing Close Call
While the company has so far avoided any major cybersecurity incidents, one particular phishing attempt underscored the need for greater employee vigilance.
“We had one incident where a former employee nearly fell for a phishing email impersonating our Managing Director,” Amelia recounts. “They were about to act on a request to purchase Amazon vouchers before double-checking. It was a close call and a clear sign we needed a better approach to behavioural security.”
This incident catalysed Amelia’s push to find a long-term solution that could not only train but influence behaviour at the right moment.
The Search for a Smarter Solution
Initially, Amelia explored traditional e-learning modules and simulated phishing platforms. While many were effective in principle, most were:
Too expensive for a small business
Designed for larger enterprises
Limited in interactivity or overly reliant on static content
“We didn’t want to just tick a compliance box. Wewanted something that actually changed how people thought and behaved about cybersecurity in real time,” she explains.
Then came a breakthrough: attending a Women in Cyber event, Amelia was introduced to Redflags®, followed by a deeper conversation at a cyber conference where Redflags® CEO Tim Ward spoke about behavioural security and the science behind real-world decision-making.
Amelia was immediately intrigued by the platform’s focus on in-the-moment nudges, which deliver contextual reminders right when users are most likely to encounter risk. For a growing company without the capacity for constant training sessions, this seemed like the perfect fit.

Partnering with Redflags®
Roadside Technologies joined Redflags®’ self-service beta programme, which was built specifically for small teams and allowed for flexible, scalable deployment of behavioural nudges and micro-campaigns.
Amelia praised the Redflags® team for their excellent onboarding experience, saying, “The support has been phenomenal. The team checked in regularly, helped with setup, and quickly addressed any issues or questions I had. The platform itself is user-friendly and very intuitive to manage.”
She launched the Welcome Campaign to set the tone and expectations, followed by targeted nudges around phishing awareness, AI usage policies, and data protection. The goal was to create a steady drumbeat of relevant security information without overwhelming employees.
She notes, “People are busy. Redflags allows us to educate them without interrupting their workflow or relying on lengthy training sessions they might forget in stressful moments.”
A Stronger, More Confident Team
In just a few months, Roadside has already seen measurable improvements:
Increased cyber confidence
Employees are more aware and more likely
to question suspicious activity.
Engaged conversations
Cybersecurity is now a regular topic at company meetings, where team members share tips and ask questions.
Behavioural change
Subtle nudges have helped reinforce good security habits such as clicking with caution, thinking before forwarding, and being alert to social engineering.
As the business continues to pursue certification and grow its product offerings, having a culture of security is more important than ever.
“Redflags® gives us the structure, tools, and behavioural insights we need to build a cyber-smart culture, without breaking the bank or stretching our team too thin,” says Amelia. “It’s an ideal solution for growing companies that care about security but don’t have a large cyber department.”
Looking Ahead
With more campaigns in the pipeline and the continued rollout of innovative products, Roadside Technologies is future-proofing both its digital and physical safety systems. Cybersecurity is no longer an afterthought; it’s now a shared responsibility, supported by smart tools and empowered people.
Key takeaways
Cybersecurity is a safety issue, not just a tech issue, especially for companies working in infrastructure and public environments.
Behavioural nudges are more effective and sustainable than traditional training in high-pressure, time-poor environments.
Redflags® empowers small businesses to implement a structured, engaging, and effective security awareness programme at
a reasonable cost.
Cultural change is possible, even with limited resources, when employees are supported with the right tools at the right time.
